Abiy Ahmed has no shame and can flip-flop anytime without blinking an eye. It is definitely a curse to have someone with a narcissistic personality disorder as the Prime minister of the second populous nation in Africa. This ham-handed PM also seems to have the aptitude to tell blatant porkies to gratify his voracious craving for idolisation from myopic audiences exclusively interested in advancing their own narrow agendas that could possibly imperil the cohesion of the country.
During his first convention with diaspora extremists in July last year, Abiy openly and unreservedly described the last 27 years as the epochs of ‘’ dirt and darkness’’ not to mention the outright dismissal of the persistent and outstanding socio-economic triumphs of his predecessors. Just for a few applauds here and there, the PM denigrated the colossal feats of economic miracle acclaimed by reputable international monetary institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank. Global monthly publications including the UK based Economist Magazine described Ethiopia as a tiger economy destined to be the powerhouse of the continent.
Nine months later the same person stood in front of World Economic Forum gathering in Davos, Switzerland, and stated that Ethiopia is among the fastest growing economies in the world, and its GDP has grown ten-fold over the last 25 years which was branded as ‘’dark years’’ by PM Abiy. Moreover, the double faced PM declared that there has been a significant reduction in poverty as well as increase in school enrolment and huge expenditure on infrastructure the result of which, the PM said, made it possible for the nation to be the major destination for foreign direct investments. Abiy is a habitual prevaricator but not infront of the attendees well aware of the significant strides the Horn nation has made since the arrival of the EPRDF led government.
What about the track record of PM Abiy since his ascension to the coveted post nine months ago? Three million citizens have been displaced from their homes and to-date, Abiy has not bothered to visit their make shift camps to witness first hand their horrendous living conditions. With the exception of Tigrai, there isn’t a single region in Ethiopia where there has not been a strife of one form another. Universities are no longer functioning due to the inter-ethnic conflicts; politically motivated detention seems to have become the norm under the leadership of PM Abiy ; trial by media is taking place in complete contravention of the presumption that one is considered innocent until proven guilty.
Peace and tranquillity that was prevalent during the ‘dark years’ no longer exists and the country is on a destructive trajectory. The economy appears to be at a standstill and confidence in local and foreign investors has plummeted. Export is on downward trend; the country used to earn 600,000,000 dollars from the mining sector but now this has gone down to a mere 100 million which is a six-fold reduction since PM Abiy came to power. Fuel is in short supply and there seems to be a huge arms circulation in the country in general and Amhara region in particular invigorating extensive surge in serious crimes including murder and bank heists.
PM Abiy has fallen under the spell of chauvinists, and the country is slowly but surely edging towards disintegration similar to what transpired in Yugoslavia. The only way to redeem the situation is to shield the federal constitution which is being endangered by the presence Amhara bigots within Abiy’s kitchen cabinet intent on re-introducing the failed form of governance that was discarded after seventeen years of armed struggle. Anything short of this can only lead to separation.
