August 31 2007 Ethiopia Celebrates, Without Bob Geldof
Ethiopia is a proud nation, the only place in Africa never to be colonized and a place with a civilization that dates back as far as ancient Egypt. Christianity flourished in Ethiopia before it took hold in Europe, and it was a Christian king of Ethiopia who gave shelter to the first Muslims in 615 A.D. after they were thrown out of Saudi Arabia as heretics — as a result, in the Koran, Mohammed tells all Muslims that they must respect and protect Ethiopia.
Annual Great Ethiopia Run Postponed by Government
Organizers of the Great Ethiopia Run, a yearly 10-kilometer foot race, say the Ethiopian government has asked them to postpone the event for unspecified security reasons. The race, now set for November 25, was originally scheduled to be run on September 9 as part of celebrations marking the Ethiopian millennium.
U.S. Senate Investigation Reveals Eritrea Providing Military Aid to Sri Lanka Tamil Tiger Rebels
A United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee report reveals that the Government of Eritrea is providing direct military assistance to Sri Lanka’s separatist Tamil Tiger rebels.
The Senate report does not generalize that military assistance is coming from ‘Eritrea’ but authoritatively says ‘Government of Eritrea’ providing ‘direct military aid’ to the Sri Lankan rebels.
Court orders followers to yield control of Ethiopian Orthodox Church
Mr. Justice Donald McIntosh has ordered the followers of the late Archbishop Abuna Yesehaq, who were running the church over the last 15 years, to hand over control to the duly appointed board of trustees. The split took place in July 1992 when Abuna Paulos was elected Patriarch bythe Holy Synod in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, after the purported resignation of Patriarch Merkorios. Yesehaq broke ties with the administration in Ethiopia because he and his followers were opposed to Paulos' appointment because they were followers of Merkorios.
August 30 2007 Norway to cut aid to Ethiopia
Ethiopia's decision to expel six of nine Norwegian diplomats from the country means Ethiopia will lose around NOK 30 million in Norwegian development aid.
"This isn't a punishment, but a consequence of the fact that so many people at the Norwegian Embassy are being kicked out," Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre told newspaper Aftenposten. That will leave a staffing shortage at the embassy, that will hinder its ability to handle foreign aid.

Exile at all costs for many young Eritreans
Zelalem knew the risk he was running trying to slip through the tight-meshed net of the Eritrean regime. His perilous flight from Eritrea started with a 2,000-dollar (1,500-euro) fee. One of his brothers has been behind bars for more than a year after a botched escape. Eritrea -- one of the most hermetic countries in the world -- imposes heavy punishment on any of its nationals who attempt to leave the territory illegally.
