10,064 condos inaugurated in the City of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, January 9, 2010 (Addis Ababa) - Some 10,064 condominium houses constructed in Jemo site at a cost of 1.3 billion Birr were transferred to beneficiaries on Saturday.
Addis Ababa City Mayor Kuma Demekssa on the occasion said the city administration been striving to alleviate housing problems in the metropolis through its housing development program .
The program has become a means to integrated urban development and poverty alleviation, he said.
Kuma said the program has created jobs to over 50,000 youth organized in micro and small-scale enterprises annually.
Manager of Housing Development Project Office of the Addis Ababa City , Yemane Tsegaye on his part said 114 local contractors have participated in the construction of the condos.
Yemane said construction of the condos has created jobs for more than 17,000 citizens and contributed share in the ongoing efforts to reduce unemployment.
After receiving keys from Mayor Kuma, some beneficiaries expressed contentment for being lucky to own the houses.
He said the administration has allocated 6.9 billion birr budget to construct condos in five years.
Housing Development Office of Lideta sub-city in the metropolis has constructed 6675 condos in two years while Housing Development Office of Gullele sub-city constructed 3389 condos.
So far 73,000 condos have been constructed in the city. Some 53,000 of the condos have already been transferred to beneficiaries.
