First, I thank the children of Axum for greeting me warmly, the workers from the board of education of Axum, for helping me distribute the pencils and I am very happy to report that we were successful in distributing, thanks to them. In one of the schools, in Axum, they preformed plays from well constructed scripts.
They also asked question’s about me and my trip. They were very happy and grateful children. In the hotel we stayed in, Remhai Hotel, the workers were very kind, and always catering to our needs. They made it easy to come in and out, because we had such a busy schedule. I also visited the obelisks and the church Mary Heart of Zion which is claimed to hold the ark of covenant.
I would like to thank everyone who supported us in Axum. Secondly, I thank the Minister of education and the Minister health from Mekelle for introducing for me to the parliament in which I explained how I collected the pencils and my trip.
They also gave me the opportunity to speak in front of grad students at their graduation. I would like to thank Mrs. Roman, head of Tigryan women for inviting me to her office, congratulating me for my work and giving me such a wonderful gift, ETV and VOA for broadcasting my story to everyone in North America and Ethiopia. I also met a remarkable and kind man named Bisrat who introduced me to Berhene.
She is truly a miracle girl. When she was a young child she survived a deadly famine and was considered dead. But the lord saved her and she survived. We spent the evening at the Tigray circus. We saw students perform amazing stunts and traditional dancing. I also got to visit the Hawelty. The artistic tower spiraling more than 100 feet above the ground, mounted by a large ball, is visible through much of Mekelle. This is the centerpiece of the large war memorial. Entranceways to the memorial are surprisingly stark, but the memorial itself is wonderfully new and engrossing.
As you enter the central portion on top of the pink cut stone, the memorial stretches on both sides from the central tower. On each side are larger than life figures, representing the victims and victors of the war. Appropriately black and stick like; the figures include mothers and children trekking out from the famine, several of them not making it. With them are the hardy Tigrayan fighters, machine guns over their backs and trusty donkeys in tow.
After the hawelty, we visited the museum I saw the young men and women who scarified so much for Ethiopia. I believe some of them my father knew, and when my dad saw the pictures, tears spread on his face. I think it is because he was proud of his friends and his childhood. I am also thankful for receiving a very special gift hawelty from the parliament of tigray and I will cherish it for many years to come. Finally, Addis Ababa “New Flower” largest city of Ethiopia has a beautiful climate and very beautiful people. I am grateful and would like to thank Dr.Yohanes from the Millennium Office, for listening to my story and giving me ideas for next time. What can I say about Hon. Mrs. Netsanet Asfaw Niguse? A Government Minister also from the Millennium office. She introduced me with ETV 2 (meant for Addis only) and I had another interview with them. I found out later that day from reading and asking questions, Hon. Mrs. Netsanet has spent most of her life serving the people. Very few people have the courage and the dedication she has, she is one of the older and wiser women in the parliament. When I was reading my bible I came across in the book of Isaiah 58:10-11 this verse can best describe her life. "Feed the hungry! Help those in trouble! Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you shall be as bright as day. And the Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy you with all good things, and keep you healthy too; and you will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.
Thank you for making me your child, for helping me to learn about the children of Ethiopia who are my brothers and sisters. Thank you all and God will bless you with the true gift of life.
