A Tigrigna poem dedicated to the ultimate Ethiopian hero Raessi Alula Aba Nega

Ras Alula Engida Equbi was born in Mennawe, a village 15 miles south of Abiy Addi, Tembien, centeral Tigrai. Starting from a simple farmers family, he became the greatest African general of all times.

Born to a simple peasant family with no connection to the royal families of Tigrai, Alula Engida Equbi was not particularly destined for greatness from his beginning. With his God given talent for leadership the natural warrior made a name for himself by proving his bravery in the battle fields.

Against all odds Alula Egida rose up the ranks of the army and finally ended up serving Emperor Yohannes IV, King of Zion and King of Kings of Ethiopia. Emperor Yohannes IV was impressed by Alula’s amazing military skills he awarded him the highest title Raessi Reussan (Ras of Rases). This Axumite title is just one step below the royal title of Leul (Prince).

Raessi Alula’s military strategy and tactical skills were never seen before in the history of Ethiopia. Raessi Alula Engeda defeated the Egyptians, the Derbush from Sudan, the Italians and many more internal enemies of the Kingdom. His glorious victories against external and internal enemies put him with the likes of Ethiopian giants; Emperor Ezana Ella-Amda, Raessi Reussan Suhulmkael Eskiyass and Emperor Tewodros II (Kassa Hailu).

The mention of the name “Alula” provoked uncontrollable fear on his enemies. He was the most intelligent and the bravest military leader Africa has produced.

Countless songs and poems have been written about this extra ordinary Tigraian military leader. The poem in this article was written when he sent the invading Egyptian army wrapped in humiliation and unrecoverable defeat.
