Members of the Ethiopian Diaspora in Washington DC have Raised Over
One Million Birr toward the Building of the Grand Renaissance Dam

The momentous, Ginbot 20 victory day was commemorated bejeweled and adorned by the historic and notable launching of the Grand Renaissance Dam billed as a huge milestone to benefit the nation enormously under the emblem of the Growth and Transformation Plan.
The 20th anniversary of the downfall of the brutal military junta that simultaneously ushered in the dawn of a new era of peace, democracy and development in Ethiopia was colorfully celebrated at the premises of the Chancery of the Ethiopian Embassy in Washington DC in the presence of hundreds of members of the Ethiopian Diaspora and other invited guests, yesterday, May 28, 2011.
His Excellency Ambassador Girma Birru, Special Envoy, Ambassador Extra-Ordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to the United States of America, who made a key note speech on the event, underlined its significance as opening a higher vista and a leap to a new venue of peace, development and democracy.
He underlined the significance of the monumental day as resonating far into the future as an event that has turned a new page for the New Ethiopia to march forward entirely afresh, by charting out a blue print and a roadmap in the quest for the realization of the genuine aspirations of the people for justice, good governance, democracy, peace and development which they have been craving for millennia on end.
He reiterated that this triumphant occasion has rightly enabled the Ethiopian people to exercise their hard won democratic and human rights which is indelibly enshrined and protected by the Ethiopian constitution to write a new chapter by nipping the grinding poverty in the bud and elevate Ethiopia to the rank of the middle income nations of the globe in the not too distant future.
In reference to the Grand Renaissance Dam whose construction shall proceed unhampered, Ambassador Girma underscored that the current popular response and initiative that resonates across the nation and beyond is a timely expression and a monumental testimony of the all-round capacity and the level of assured confidence that Ethiopia has attained to build the Grand Dam purely and solely relying on its own resources and the ingenuity of its people.
The Ambassador called upon the Ethiopian Diaspora to infuse their due share for the realization of the Grand Renaissance Dam by buying Government bonds and by way of voluntary contribution towards the construction of the huge project.
In a swift and immediate response to the appeal made by the Ambassador, invited guests who congregated for the celebratory triumphant popular day expressed their unreserved support for the building of the Grand Renaissance Dam by raising on the spot over One Million Birr by purchasing bonds and expressing their pledges.
According to the Diaspora Community organizers, it was learnt that to-day's spontaneous response by the few members who were celebrating the occasion is the tip of the iceberg and a pioneering harbinger to the unfolding grand financial infusion yet to be undertaken shortly by the Diaspora Ethiopians throughout the US and Canada towards the Clarion National Call.
