Ethiopia’s parliament swore in Hailemariam Desalegn prime minister on Friday the first peaceful change of power in modern history of Ethiopia.

Hailemariam was unanimously voted in as chair of the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front last weekend by the ruling party’s 180-member leadership.

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn succeeds former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, who died on Aug. 20, 2012 after short illness.

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn promised to continue the late Prime Minister Meles' policies.

The newly elected Prime Minister is married a father of three children. He is the first civilian without any military background to rule Ethiopia.
