Tigrai Online declares war on corruption and bribery in Ethiopia
Bribery and corruption are the most dangerous practices against development and democracy in Ethiopia. Sure there is bribery everywhere in the world but in the third world in general and in Ethiopia in particular it has become part of the culture.

Bribery and corruption are the most dangerous practices against development and democracy in Ethiopia. Sure there is bribery everywhere in the world but in the third world in general and in Ethiopia in particular it has become part of the culture. Bribery is so deep rooted so chronic most people take it as a normal business expense. We can’t have meaningful development and justice as long as we are immersed deep in the evil culture of bribery.

It is nearly impossible to eliminate corruption and bribery, but if we, the Ethiopian people and the government work together it could be reduced significantly. Bribery in Ethiopia is everywhere in the government, in the public sector embassies of foreign countries, and nongovernmental organizations.

How do we fight corruption and bribery?

How do we fight corruption and bribery? It starts from us the people; we should stop being so selfish and stop giving bribery. The root of bribery is greed and selfishness if there are no givers there will no be receivers, if there are no receivers there won’t be givers. The person who gives the bribe is so greedy maybe he or she is trying to win a court case, or they are trying to get a plot of land for business, they are trying to get a business license or trying to get the best plot of land to build a house. Whatever the case is they want the best of the best for themselves so to get it they pay bribe. Those who can’t afford to pay bribe their files would be buried or sold to the highest bidder.

The person who is receiving the bribe also is a greedy and evil person. Some low level people may take bribe because they can’t afford to feed their family but the top people are taking bribe simply because they are selfish and greedy.

There are many circumstances where people would say they were forced to pay bribe to do business. The main one is time constraint where someone is in the country for a few weeks and they don’t have the luxury of taking their time to finish their business. Most people would take the easy route and pay bribe to finish their business on time but that is not reason enough to support evil. Encouraging and supporting bribe will hurt us all in the long run.

I can’t come up with a magic bullet that will completely eliminate bribery from Ethiopia, but if we work together we can come up with great solution to minimize bribery in Ethiopia. For now my suggesting is the government should establish an eight hundred phone number, a website and an office where people with concrete evidence can report about bribery. Bribery givers and receivers should be punished severely with no exception.

What do you think should be done to help fight corruption and bribery in our country? Please suggest a practical solution.

Corruption and bribery does not have race, religion, or color so please don’t make this discussion about any ethnic or religious group. We really want to help our country and this idea was suggested by many of you.

Reminder to all of you genuine Ethiopians, there are so many Shabiya agents working day and night in Ethiopian websites like Tigrai Online trying to derail us from having helpful discussions and to create suspicion and hate among Ethiopians so beware of this before you respond to any comment.

Some of you are worried about the wording in the picture above, it is that way on purpose.
