Completion Report for Dry Pit Latrine Construction at Dedebit Primary School

July 28, 2013

Tigrai Online - Tigrai, Ethiopia - I. Executive Summary Tigrai Development Association (TDA) as a community based organization has been implementing a number of successful projects especially educational and health care service projects at the grassroots level in partnership with an active financial support of different donor organizations, community members and individuals.

One of these donor community members is UTNA (Union of Tigrians in North America). With the financial support of UTNA, TDA was able to build toilet blocks at Dedebit primary school. Further 100 Combined desks and 10 teachers’ desks were manufactured and provided from UTNA to equip the school with internal facilities, with the overall budget of birr 452,640.00.

Dedebit primary school has currently 778 students, of which 420 (54%) are females. Dedebit Complete Primary school is located in the North Western Zone of Tigrai Region, 73 kms from Shire, the capital of the North Western Zone of Tigrai Region.

The main reason for the intervention of the project was to solve the shortage of toilet and furniture. The school’s toilet problem has been alleviated through the construction with the financial assistance obtained from Union Tigrians in North America (UTNA). Had the project not been implemented, many students of the school would have been forced to use an open -air toilet or would have used the congested old toilets which are currently out of service.

II. Testimonies from Beneficiaries Students, parent & teacher association (PTA) representatives and the school principal were interviewed and their testimonies are as follows:

1. Ato Shiferaw Brneh (Member of PTA) & the school principal We are very happy that these toilet blocks are constructed especially separately for both genders. The community is having the same feeling… We are planning to transform the school into a model school and this and future assistance from UTNA is of paramount significant. We will take good care of the toilets.

2. Tifto Tsegay (Grade seven Female Student). I am having good feeling and happy and wanted to thank TDA and UTNA for they made us to use separate toilets. Regarding the use of the toilet the kids may have a problem to its use and we will advise them to properly use it.

3. Negasi Haile (Grade eight male student). My name is Negasi Haile. I have attended grades 1-8 here. Now I am grade eight. I am very happy of the construction of the toilet blocks. The existing toilet block was not sufficient taking the number of students into consideration. I wanted to say thank you to TDA and UTNA
