PRESS RELEASE

Flaminia Battistelli
Communication Officer of the Italian Development Cooperation
Tigrai Online - May 30, 2013

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – At the presence of  Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, H.E. Mr Lapo Pistelli, Director General of Italian Development Cooperation, Mr. Giampaolo Cantini,  UNIDO Representative and Director of Regional Office, Mr. Jean Bagambanya Bakole, and State Minister of Industry, H.E. Ato Tadesse Haile, the Agreement for the second phase of the initiative "Technical Assistance Project for the Up-Grading of the Ethiopian Leather and Leather Products Industry", was signed today. The project will be implemented by UNIDO in the next two years, through a 750,000 Euro grant made available by the Italian Development Cooperation. The ceremony was held in the EIFCCOS Cluster located in Yeka Sub-City, which has been established by the Ethiopian Government and supported by the Italian Development Cooperation and UNIDO.

The new Italian intervention in support of the leather industry was initiated in 2012 and is the last of several initiatives undertaken in this sector by the Italian Development Cooperation and UNIDO in the last ten years. The first phase of the project has provided support to the leather sector as a whole, strengthening technical and managerial skills of tanneries, small and medium enterprises producing leather goods, as well as of the Leather Industry Development Institute (LIDI), the leading institution in the sector created by the Ethiopian Ministry of Industry.

The new phase focuses specifically on formal and informal micro small and medium enterprises in the leather products industry, supporting the development of organized clusters. It aims at increasing competitiveness and income of such enterprises through upgrades of quality in compliance with domestic and international standards and through improvements in the organization of clusters. Activities will include technical and managerial skills upgrading programmes (such as product development and manufacturing, introduction of Enterprise Resource Planning system, marketing and purchasing) both at firm and cluster levels.

During the period of the new Ethio-Italian Cooperation Framework 2013-2015, which was signed yesterday, May 30, by the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, H.E. Mr. Lapo Pistelli and the State Minister of Finance and Economic Development of Ethiopia, H.E. Ato Ahmed Shide, Italy will therefore keep supporting the leather industry, in line with the long-lasting partnership with Ethiopia for this sector’s development.

Italy and Ethiopia pledge to a new Cooperation Framework 2013-2015

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - The State Minister of Finance and Economic Development of Ethiopia, H.E. Ato Ahmed Shide, and the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, H.E. Mr Lapo Pistelli, signed today the new three year Ethio-Italian Cooperation Framework which envisages new initiatives in the two priority sectors of agriculture and rural development, and provision of basic services (health, education and WASH), with a specific focus on the cross-cutting issues of private sector development, gender and environment.

The new Ethio-Italian Cooperation Framework 2013-2015 has been developed in close cooperation with the Government of Ethiopia and the relevant sector Ministries, in line with the 2015 targets set in the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), and builds on the long-lasting cooperation and partnership for development between the two countries which dates back to 1976.

Re-affirming Italy’s commitment to Ethiopia, Mr Lapo Pistelli said, “Ethiopia’s progress is incontrovertible and as it goes forward, Italy is strongly committed to support the Government in achieving the development goals of its Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) and the MDGs, together with the other Development Partners.”

The Cooperation Framework 2013-2015, which will be financed by 98.9 million Euro through both soft loans and grants - therefore doubling the 2009-2011 Italian contribution of 48 million Euro (grant) - is indeed the result of a process that embraces Italy’s active role in the promotion of the ‘EU+ Joint Cooperation Strategy for Ethiopia’, aimed at ensuring a coherent and cohesive development approach by all EU Member States and Noway. Moreover, the Framework encompasses Italy's adhesion to the “New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition Initiative”, launched in 2012 by the US under their G8 Presidency, through which Italy confirms water, agriculture, rural and private development as its priority areas.
