PRESS RELEASE

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Director of Gender Directorate of Ministry of Education (MoE), Director of Directorate for Special Support and Inclusive Education Directorate of MoE, Director of UNESCO- International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA), Director of the Italian Development Cooperation (IDC) Ethiopia, met today, 2 July 2013, for the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding between UNESCO- IICBA and Regional States Education Bureaus (REB) of Afar and Benishangul-Gumuz.  Within the framework of the Project “Retaining Girls in Lower Secondary Schools and Increasing their Learning Outcomes in Ethiopia”, the MoU will regulate the setting up of Income Generating Schemes in six pilot schools of the two regions.

The project is a result of a joint effort between the Government of Italy, the Government of Ethiopia and UNESCO IICBA that aims to increase retention and to reduce dropout of girls in lower secondary education in Afar and Benishnagul Gumuz, which have a higher national average of drop-out rate for girls.

In May 2011, Italy decided to support the three-year Project with an overall contribution of 500.000 USD, of which 164.000USD will be devoted to the setting up of sustainable income generating schemes in order to provide financial support to needy girls in the six target schools. The income generating activities (IGA) will be led by the schools themselves and the Girls’ Education Support Structures, established by and composed of community’s members, with the aim of advocating for the promotion of girls education. To ensure the sustainability of the schemes, the IGA have been identified by the regional institutions.
