‘To be a mother in Ethiopia’ is the new section of the exhibition ‘The Smiles of African Mothers’ by the Comitato Collaborazione Medica (CCM) or Collaborative Medical Committee-an Italian NGO working on the right to health-and the prestigious Magnum Photos agency, which will be previewed in Addis Ababa at 18.30 on 30 May 2013 at the Italian Cultural Institute. The President of CCM, Marilena Bertini, the Director of Magnum, Lorenza Bravetta, and the Italian Ambassador to Ethiopia, S.E. Renzo Rosso will be present at the opening.
‘The Smiles of African Mothers’ is being expanded for 2013 with this new section dedicated to CCM’s work on maternal and child health in Ethiopia, where the organisation has been working for over 30 years. ‘To be a mother in Ethiopia’ brings together a selection of shots taken by Magnum photogapher Bieke Depoorter during a trip to visit CCM projects which took place last February, and in particular focuses on the activities of the NGO in the Filtu and Bale areas, where it works with the support of the Italian Development Cooperation. The section is the first of three thematic studies which will expand the exhibition ‘The Smiles of African Mothers’ until 2015.
The wider campaign ‘the Smiles of African Mothers’, which the show makes up a part of, will be ending the same year in 2015, hopefully having fulfilled the objectives set at its launch in 2011; to support 200,000 women during pregnancy and childbirth, and to treat and vaccinate 500,000 children in the countries where we work. In the first year of the project, assistance during pregnancy and childbirth was guaranteed to over 27 thousand women and a further 122 thousand children were supported during birth and provided with treatments and vaccinations. In Ethiopia specifically, CCM reached 3,060 women during pregnancy and childbirth in 2012; 14,426 children under five were vaccinated and treated; and 17,660 men and women were educated on maternal and child health.
“Showing the preview of these fantastic photos in the country they depict is our way of reinforcing the links that have united CCM with Ethiopia for many decades” said Marilena Bertini, President of CCM, “the hospitality of the Italian Cultural Institute and the support of the Italian Cooperative are an honour for us, and underline the value of this initiative which sees us working alongside the prestigious Magnum Photos agency.”
After the Ethiopian preview, which will be on show until 13 June, the section will arrive in Italy where it will be officially opened on 21 June in the Piazza Carlo Alberto in Turin. Info at www.ccm-italia.org
