PJTI calls for International Conference on Peace Building, and Justice in post-war Tigrai

Dear All,

On behalf of PJTI and on my own behalf, I am writing this letter to ask you to attend an upcoming International Conference on Peace Building, and Justice in post-war Tigray organized by Peace and Justice for Tigreans International (PJTI).  The Conference will be held virtually via Zoom on Jan 27th, 2024 from 1:00PM-3:00PM EST. The conference aims to bring together Tigray Diaspora Community leaders, experts, and stakeholders from various states of the US and the globe to discuss crucial matters that concern peace and justice in Tigray and the region.

PJTI takes the past four years as the worst time in Tigray’s history with social, economic, and political crisis due to the genocidal war waged on Tigray. The aftermath of the war is still being felt by the people of Tigray especially those who are displaced from their homes and those suffering from the unfolding famine. As an advocacy organization founded by Tigreans in diaspora, PJTI believes that during this unique period in Tigray’s history, the diaspora has to continue to contribute toward the attainment of peace, justice and accountability as it did during the fight for survival.  In this regard, while the International Community had been actively involved in partially documenting the human rights violations, with the recent conclusion of the ICHREE mandate, internationally sponsored justice may not be achievable. PJTI does not believe that the victims of the war can get justice through the current approach of transitional justice mechanism being led by the Ethiopian government. Moreover, the lack of transparency in the transitional justice process and the absence of an agreed road map to deliver justice to the victims of genocide and war crimes are of great concern.

The conference, therefore, aims to provide a platform for open and constructive discourse among Tigreans in diaspora, friends of Tigray and international organizations engaged in advocacy of human rights to explore viable solutions, to promote collaboration in activities designed to advocate for the attainment of sustainable peace through internationally acceptable mechanisms for justice and accountability.

We will have speakers who will address issues of:

  1. Justice and accountability taking ICHREE and Pretoria agreement into consideration
  2. Report from the Tigray Genocide Inquiry Commission
  3. Scenarios to achieve peace-essence and elements of peace building

This will be followed by a panel discussion of experts who would look into the above topics of peace and justice from the angle of the security crisis, humanitarian crisis in the region and journalistic lens. The panel will come up with recommendations that help in the peace building efforts and full justice.

We sincerely hope that you will be able to grace our conference with your presence and share your insights on these critical matters.

Sincerely,
Mulugeta Gebregziabher, PhD
