ETHIOPIAN -AMERICANS AGAINST HR-2003
By ETHIOPIAN -AMERICANS AGAINST HR-2003
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Los Angeles, Ca.
Nov. 12 2007
On November 4, 2007, following a Town Hall meeting of Ethiopian-Americans, an Ad Hoc committee representing concerned Ethiopian-Americans residing in California was formed with its office located in the city of Los Angeles. The main objective of the committee is to make a grassroots effort and be a decisive force in stopping the Senate from passing HR-2003: The Ethiopian Democracy and Accountability Act of 2007.
On October 2nd 2007, the United States House of Representatives passed a bill known as HR-2003, which was introduced by Congressman Donald Payne. This bill is currently before the Senate select Committee on Foreign Relations.
However, the Town Hall meeting attendees believe that this bill will threaten U.S. National Security interests and condemns an important ally in a war on terror. The bill also overlooks Ethiopia's current progress toward democracy and political reconciliation, not to mention it impedes further democratic progress and economic development.
As is well documented, Ethiopia is a close ally of the United States in the fight against terrorism and its effort to promote regional stability in the Horn of Africa. Despite this, however, the House rushed and recklessly approved a measure undermining these efforts and the critical relationship with the United States. A large majority of Ethiopian-Americans regard this as an unconscionable and irresponsible action. The bill, HR-2003, which purports to encourage human rights and democracy in Ethiopia is misguided and would do neither.
As constituents, we ask that the U.S. senate and the Committee on Foreign Relations give a careful consideration to this Resolution and help maintain the time tested bilateral relationship between the United States and Ethiopia.
We, also, call our communities to join us in this effort to stop HR-2003. We need to take action, and we need to take action now. We urge you to contact your Senators and let them know you oppose this bill. It is important that we get the word out to as many people as possible, and keep the effort up until we are assured this Bill has been defeated. Our strongest tool is our numbers. We are no longer the silent majority.
