The newly elected Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi will visit Ethiopia. A high level Egyptians delegation is coming to Addis Ababa next Wednesday to prepare for Mohamed Morsi. Morsi will be in Ethiopia to be participating in the African Union Summit.
Morsi’s visit to Ethiopia is the second official international visit. The first country he visited was the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Morsi will be the first Egyptian president to visit Ethiopia after President Hosni Mubarak’s assassination attempt in Addis Ababa in the 1990’s.
Ethiopia and Egypt had an uneasy relationship for the past few decades because of the unfair monopoly Egypt had over the Nile waters. After the fall of Hosni Mubarak last year, the Egyptians have softened their stand a little. The EPRDF government in Ethiopia has had the toughest stand on Egypt in history pressuring it to share the Nile waters more fairly. The current prime minster of Ethiopia Meles Zenawi made it abundantly clear more than once Ethiopia will use its god given right to use the Nile waters no matter what.
