EPRDF Council elects Ato Hailemariam Desalegn as its Chairman

The Council of the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) elected Hailemariam Desalegn as its Chairman and Dmeke Mekonnen as its Vice Chairman on its regular session held on Friday September 14, 2012 and Saturday September 15, 2012.

The Council of EPRDF has 180 members equally represented by the four member parties that make up the organization.

Haile Mariam Desalegne born 19 July 1965 is an Ethiopian politician who has served in the government of Ethiopia as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2010. Following the death of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi on 20 August 2012, Desalegne was named acting prime minister and will remain in the position until new elections in 2015

Haile Mariam was born in 1965 in the Boloso Sore district of the Wolaita Zone in southern Ethiopia. He studied and spent most of his youth in the area. In 1988, Haile Mariam obtained a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the Addis Ababa University

The 47 years old acting Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has been married to his longtime girlfriend, Roman Tesfaye, who has a masters degree in leadership and economics. Prior to her current job at the African Union, She was an advisor for the people of South region and was on the human rights commission of Ethiopia. The couple has three daughters. They are both protestant Christians.

There is not much information about her and the kids. Roman was born in Southern Ethiopia and like her husband she grew up in that area and went to school in Ethiopia. We hope the first lady to be will positively contribute to the betterment of the Ethiopian socity in the next three years where she would be a first lady.

Demeke Mokennen is member of Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM) and he is the Minister of Education of Ethiopia.

Amhara National Democratic Movemnt is one the founding parties of EPRDF. The Ethiopian People's Democratic Movement (EPDM) changed it's name to ANDM in 1994 in Bahir Dar.

The other three major parties that make up EPRDF are the Tigraian Peoples' Liberation Front (TPLF), the Oromo Peoples' Democratic Organization (OPDO), the South Ethiopian Peoples' Democratic Front (SEPDF).
