African Union fifty years on. An event of celebration and reflection

Ethiopian National Consensus Form in collaboration with African Diaspora Alliance cordially invites you to attend the Golden Jubilee celebration of the African Union.

The year 2013 marks the fiftieth anniversary celebration of the formation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). It will also be a little more than a decade since the formation of the African Union which seeks to promote “an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in global arena.

Fifty years ago, the Leaders of thirty-two African countries met in Addis Ababa and decided to establish the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

Recently liberated from the shackles of colonialism, the new States, meeting in the Ethiopian capital, saw the unity of the continent as a means of restoring Africa’s dignity and pride, after many centuries of colonial domination and exploitation.

The African peoples solemnly proclaimed, through the voice of their leaders, their unalienable right to self-determination and freedom.

Five decades later the mission of the founding heroines and heroes, to rid the continent of colonialism and apartheid, has largely been fulfilled. This was possible because of the Pan Africanist values of unity and solidarity.
As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the OAU and AU, we are inspired by their example, and pledge to work together in solidarity for an integrated, people- centered and prosperous Africa, at peace with itself. We call on all Africans and the African Diaspora to help define the mission for the next fifty years, towards Agenda 2063.T
