The tiny but oil rich nation of Qatar use to be a staunch supporter of the President-for-life of Eritrea. At one point the relationship was so great the Qatari Amir HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani gave the Eritrean dictator a personal jet as a gift.
President Isaiass Afeworki used the millions of dollars he was getting from Qatar and other Arab countries to finance anti Ethiopia terrorists.
In 2008 Ethiopia cut ties with Qatar accusing it supporting terrorism against Ethiopia. "The Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has decided to break diplomatic relations with the State of Qatar," Ethiopia's government said in an email statement.
Ethiopia and Qatar resumed diplomatic and economic ties in November 2012 ending a four-year row over Qatar’s support to Ethiopian opposition groups and spreading terrorism through Eritrea in the Horn of Africa.
