The total cost of building the Hawassa airport and the completion time will be known after the design and bidding for the construction is complete.

In 2005 E.C. the capital city of was visited by 631 thousand foreign and domestic tourists and it earned 130 million Ethiopian birr.

The region’s culture and tourism officer Mr. Zerihun Zewde said because there is no airport the city is losing so much tourist revenue. Today the only access to the city is motor vehicle transportation and that is very limiting and slow. Tourists who can afford and choose to fly don’t have the choice to fly to the city.
