Construction of the much awaited Gereb-Giba Dam Mekelle officially commenced today

Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael Deputy President of Tigrai state and Mr. Tan Jian the Chinese ambassador in Ethiopia, were present in the official opening ceremony among others.
Construction of the much awaited Gereb-Giba Dam a water sypply project for the city of Mekelle officially commenced today. The construction of Gereb-Giba Dam is aimed to relieve the acute water shortage in the city of Mekelle by providing clean drinking water. In addition to providing drinking water the dam will provide water supply to the industrial parks and factories in and around the city of Mekelle. It is expected constructing this huge dam will play a decisive role on the growth and development of the city and local communities.
The inter-government framework agreement of Mekelle Water Supply Development Project between the respective countries to construct the Gereb-Giba Dam Mekelle was signed over a year ago. Due to various challenges including bitter opposition by members of the Amhara regional state representatives in the Ethiopian parliament the project was delayed for over a year.
Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael Deputy President of Tigrai state, Mr. Tan Jian the Chinese ambassador in Ethiopia, other state and city dignitaries were present in the official starting of the Gereb-Giba Dam Mekelle construction.
The Giba dam construction project will be constructed by the Chinese company China Gezhouba Group Corporation-CGGC and it will be completed in three years. The cost for the Gereb-Giba Dam Mekelle will be about nine billion Ethiopian Birr or about 305 million dollars.
The city of Mekelle is not only the capital of Tigrai, but it is one of the top three largest cities in Ethiopia. Mekelle is also the second largest political and business center next to Addis Ababa the capital city of Ethiopia.
