Ethiopian Railways Corporation will buy 30 modern trains from china’s biggest train maker Changchun Railway Vehicles Co. Ltd.
China CNR Corporation Limited (CNR), one of the country's biggest train makers, announced on Tuesday that it will produce 30 train coaches for Ethiopia. Xinhua reported that the company has said this will help it to grasp a share in the booming African market.
Changchun Railway Vehicles Co. Ltd. which is part of China CNR Corporation Limited has signed contracts with Ethiopian Railways Corporation to produce 30 25G coaches, including 20 hard-seat, four hard-sleeper, four soft-sleeper and two dinning carriages with a designed speed of 120 km per hour, according to the company.
The first batch of the trains will run from Addis Ababa the capital of Ethiopia to Djibouti. Djibouti serves as the main port by Ethiopian shipping companies. Bringing fast and modern trains to the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway will greatly enhance business for Ethiopian companies. The rest of the trains will be serving the brand new railway networks being under construction throughout the country.
As part of the five year growth and transformation plan the Ethiopian government is building extensive new railway lines to connect the main regions of the country. The new networks will be covering about 2,600 km distance in the year 2015.
