Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appoints ten females to his cabinet which is fifty percent of the newly formed cabinet.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appoints ten females to his cabinet which is fifty percent of the newly formed cabinet. The Ethiopian prime minister also reduced the number of cabinet members from 28 to just 20 members.

There are two firsts in this new appointments, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali appointed Ms. Aisha Mohammed as the next Minister of Defense making Ms. Aisha Mohammed the first female and Muslim Defense Minister in Ethiopian history. The second first is Dr. Abiy divided the Ethiopian cabinet half and half between men women members which is delighting to news.

Prime Minister Abiy also consolidated many of the previous ministries into the remaining 20 eliminating many repetitive once. He also created a new minster of peace which would be led by former house speaker Ms. Muferiat Kamil.

3. Adanech Abebe – Minister of Revenue
4. Fetlework Gebregziabher – Minister of Trade and Industry
5. Dagmawit Mogess – Minister of Transport
6. Hirut Woldemariam (PhD) – Minister of Science and Higher education
7. Yalem Tsegaye Assfaw -Minister of Women’s’, Children’s’ and Youth
8. Ergoge Tesfaye (PhD) -Minister of Labour and Social Affairs
9. Hirut Kassaw (PhD) -Minister of Culture and Tourism
10. Fitsum Assefa (PhD) – Minister of Planning and Development Commission

Tigrai Online is happy to see the number of women increased to fifty percent of the cabinet. We think the reshuffling should have been done first after the new prime minister came to power.
