Isaias Afeworki feels nauseous about the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

Tigrai Online, September 28, 2013

The ageing despotic President for life of Eritrea who has held the Eritrean people hostage for 24 years is green with jealousy about Ethiopia’s economic and social progress. In his latest interview with Eritrean state TV he dismissed the importance of hydro electric power development in Ethiopia.  He seems so angry especially about the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam which is being built on the Blue Nile River and will be completed in 2017. When the mega Dam is completed it will produce 6000 MW of power. Could it be because his masters the Egyptians are pushing him so hard to do something to stop it?

Eritrean president for life isayass afeworki - Tigrai Online
I don’t see what all this Millennium Dam, Millennium Dam, Millennium Dam is all about? Every time I hear the word Millennium Dam in every TV program and every news media, it makes me feel nauseous.

When he was belittling the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, he said “Israel has just about seven million people and it generates about 11,000 MWs, so what is 5000 or 6000 MW for 80 million people”. “I don’t see what all this Millennium Dam, Millennium Dam, Millennium Dam is all about? Every time I hear the word Millennium Dam in every TV program and every news media, it makes me feel nauseous.” He added. We know why he is so mad about the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

When Eritrea is suffering from water shortage and power blackouts in the capital city Asmera and other major urban centers are expected every day, he has the audacity to say the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is nothing.

Let’s see how Eritrean power generation and electricity supply in Eritrea is in 2013 shall we; The total power generation capacity in Eritrea is 60 MW from diesel-fired generators. There is no hydropower or wind power generation at present.

80% of the population has no electricity. “Hospitals are suffering because of shortage of electricity. A blood laboratory result could take more than 10 days. This Means if your sickness is critical your family will accept the result paper days after your funeral” an Eritrean said about the dire situation in his county.

Now lets see how Ethiopian power generation and capacity is;

  1. First Ethiopian Dam on Akaki River 1932 6 megawatt
  2. Tis Abay I on Nile River in 1953 11.5 megawatt
  3. Koka Dam Awash River in 1960 42.3 megawatt
  4. Awash II Awash River in 1966 32 megawatt
  5. Awash III Awash River in 1971 32 megawatt
  6. Fincha Dam Fincha River in 1973 134 megawatt
  7. Melka Wekena Dam 1989 153 megawatt
  8. Sor Dam 1990 5 megawatt

  9. Tis Abay II 2001 75 mega watt
  10. Gilgel Gibe I Omo River 2004 184 megawatt
  11. Tekeze High Dam Tekeze river 2009 310 megawatt
  12. Gilgel Gibe II Omo River 2009 420 megawatt
  13. Tana Beles Belesa River 2010 460 megawatt

Total installed from Hydro Power 1864.8 MW, Diesel 173.3 MW and from Geo thermal 7.3 MW total over 2045 MW.

  1. Gilgel Gibe III Omo River 2013 1870 megawatt
  2. Ashegoda Wind Farm Project (Enderta)2011 120 megawatt
  3.  Fincha Amerti Nesse Nile River 2012 100 megawatt
  4. Halele Worabese 2014 Omo River 440 megawatt
  5. Gilgel Gibe IV 2014 tributary of Omo river 2,000 megawatt
  6. Chemoga Yeda 2013 Nile River near Debre Markos 278 megawatt
  7. Genale Dawa 2009 256 megawatt
  8. Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam 2017 Nile River 6000 megawatt

In four years by the time the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and the other dams are completed there will be 11064 MW added to the Ethiopian national grid from hydro only. In addition to that there are a number of wind and geo thermal projects under construction right now. The total available electric power by 2017 will be over 13,000 MW.

If Isreal generates 11,000 MW, it didn't do it over night. Ethiopia is starting at one point and it progressing wonderfully to achieve its goal.

The 25-year Master Plan of the Ethiopian national power utility EEPCO also includes the following projects.

  1. Tekeze II 450 MW,
  2. Genale Dawa IV 256 MW,
  3. Border 800 - 1200 MW, located on the Blue Nile.
  4. Mendaia 2400 - 2800 MW, located on the Blue Nile.
  5. Beko Abo 2100 MW, located on the Blue Nile.
  6. Kara Dodi 1600 MW; prefeasibility study by Norconsult-Lahmeyer financed by a grant from Norway is complete; the dam will be located on the Blue Nile.

Now that we saw the facts about the Ethiopian and Eritrean power generation does the dictator of Eritrea has any right to speak about Ethiopia’s energy policy? The answer is a resounding NO.
