Ambassador Sahlework Zewde becomes the first female president of Ethiopia
Ethiopia’s Parliament on Thursday approved the Seasoned Diplomat, Sahlework Zewde to become the first female president of Ethiopia. Ambassador Sahlework Zewde served as a diplomat in different countries representing Ethiopia. At her last job she was a Special Representative of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union at the level of Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The previous president of Ethiopia, Dr. Mulatu Teshome resigned from the position a few days ago. Sahlework Zewde is the first female president, though the presidential position is symbolic, having a woman as a president of Ethiopia is appositive development in Ethiopian politics. A few weeks ago the Ethiopian prime minister appointed ten females to his cabinet which is 50% of the total Ethiopian cabinet including the Minister of Defense.
